The Giraffe Family

... has a complicated taxonomy. According to Wikipedia, four species of giraffe were proposed in 2016: the northern, southern, Masai and reticulated giraffes. The reticulated giraffe is also known as the Somali giraffe.

This classification, however, has been criticised, and some suggest that there are six distinct species.

Under the four-species system, the northern giraffe has four subspecies: the Kordofan, the Nubian, the West African (a.k.a. the Niger or Nigerian) and Rothschild's (a.k.a. the Baringo or Ugandan). The southern giraffe has two: the Angolan (a.k.a. the Namibian) and the South African. The Masai giraffe also has two subspecies, one of which is known as the Masai giraffe and the other as the Rhodesian giraffe.

The okapi is also a member of the giraffe family (in a genus of its own).
